Civil War Era Materials

In 2011, the William & Mary Libraries Special Collections Research Center launched the project, "From Fights to Rights: The Long Road to a More Perfect Union," to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the 50th anniversary of the modern Civil Rights Movement. In addition to public programs and exhibits, the project also included an effort by volunteers to transcribe the thousands of letters and diaries in our collections of both Confederate and Union soldiers in the field and their families at home, and make them available online. This collection is a continuation of that project and has expanded to include more materials created during the Civil War Era. These transcriptions are an important part of making our collections more accessible to the public.
