Worked in F.H. 16 during day and
at night in F.H. 23 doing surgery
Many gassed arriving but none
severe.  Mobile 7. came in but were
a helpless outfit - F.H. from 36"
Div. also here & a bum lot.  Very busy
and everything filled with patients
evacuating to Chalons.
About 155 gas patients daily.
Nights quite cold.
9" 10" 11" 12" out so work quieted down
Went into Suippes, a wrecked town
Had a joy ride leaving in R.C. jitney
air [...?] of 13" for Reims and passed
thru some beautiful country till
struck battle zone where all was des-
olate & deserted, such a lonesome
woe-begone appearance. not a
soul living in the city and not a
single house untouched by shell-fire.
The Cathedral all but ruined. What
feelings produced by a city of such
size absolutely deserted.
Spent 3 hours there then drove to
Epernay where had lunch, leaving
about 4 P.M. drove into Paris, butted
around for a few hours when left
for camp reaching there in time
for breakfast via Chalons.
14"- 15" very quiet Div. in rest area
receiving about 125 patients daily.
On 23" left on 72 hr. pass for St. Aignan
to get baggage.  found trunk &
bedding-roll there.  got what I
wanted [from?] roll & started back
via Paris spending night at
Tours. Arriving Paris morning
spent day & night there but as
baggage did not show up had
to leave without it.
Bought ticket to St. Menehould as heard
Div. had moved there however
got off at Chalons &
found R.C. car going to F.H. 16,
which we found at Les Islettes
reaching there for supper.  Moved
noon next day 27" to Charpentry
Div. back in line.
