THE FLAT HAT Tuesday, February 10, 1953 Administration Opens Music Department As Independent Division Under Dr. Haigh The college Board of Visitors has established an independent Department of Music because of the growing "interest of young men and women in music, the most rapidly developing field of study and activity in the elemen- tary and secondary schools of Virginia." Music courses have been of- fered by the Department of Fine Arts, but that department recom- mended the creation of a separ- ate department in order for mu- sic to have its "proper place in the life of the College." Headed by Associate Profes- sor Andrew C. Haigh, the new department will offer courses in music theory, history and litera- ture, instrumental materials and methods and applied music. W&M Band The new department will in- clude a concentration in music offering a Bachelor of Arts De- gree in music rather than the previously offered Degree in Fine Arts. The requirements for a degree in the department will of- fer a program arranged for three types of music students. First, courses will be offered for those students with a general interest in music who do not plan to continue in the music field af- ter graduation from college. There will be a more advanced type of work for those planning to do musical research or study music- ology in the graduate department of a university. Lastly, there will be a program preparing students for a Virginia teacher's certifi- cate in music. The department hopes to pro- duce a first class band, a sym- phony orchestra and possibly a Summer band and choral school which will cover a two week period and will be largely open to high school students interested in attending William and Mary to major in music.
