A Brief Statement of What Is Expected of a Member of The William and Mary Choir ITEM NO. 7---Concert Commitments---On the BULLETIN are listed some of the public performances to which we are committed. As we progress in our year's work, there will undoubtedly be other requests for performances of our Choir. Some of these invitations we will accept. Therefore, please stand ready to perform if you are asked to do so. The Choir has a membership annually of over 70 students, who pursue studies in a wide variety of liberal arts concentrations offered at the College. The highlights of the year are two campus concerts--at Christmas and in the Spring. In addition, the Choir performs regularly at College convocations, graduation ceremonies and other special events and has appeared frequently on television and radio The Choir has also pressed numerous albums and has received many outstanding awards and acknowledgements including a recent presentation by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. In receiving the famed George Washington Honor Medal, the Choir was cited for its accomplishments "in helping to achieve a better understanding of the American Way of Life." Each spring, a smaller group from the Choir, about 40 students, is chosen on a competitive basis from the larger 70 member Choir to participate in the annual tour and in important off-campus "special invitation" performances. In past years these tours have taken the Choir to New York, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Atlanta as well as to all sections and major communities of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In concert the Choir always performs a major work. Programs include music from the masters, folk songs, contemporary numbers, selections from well-known musicals and lighter-vein, novelty tunes. The objectives of the Choir, according to its Director, are to "furnish the liberal arts students with valuable experiences in music, to develop musical values and abilities, a sense of discipline and a feeling of accomplishment." In the past 29 years that Dr. Fehr has been Director of the Choir, critics have acclaimed and praised the musical organization with comments;"...beautifully and carefully trained choir"..."the Choir sings with precision and excellent diction"..."interesting and tasteful interpretations"..."happily varied program avoiding monotony"...the Choir's singing was polished, their modulations and dynamics were very fine"..."devotion and enthusiasm marked their performance"..."a striking appearance and an overall disciplined picture"..."the Choir is a distinct credit to the College." "CHOIR" ===ability to sing part acceptably ===attendance ===concentrated effort and attention; attitude and conduct in rehearsals and public performances ..means a spirited group of students and their noble leader, HARD AT WORK Attitudes Towards the Work of the Choir Through the years the Choir has established a fine reputation on campus and away from campus. Because membership in Choir is an honor, demands loyalty and great responsibility, it is up to each member to help maintain the commendable reputation the Choir has attained. Each member must have a love for good music, for doing music beautifully and artistically. When a person is selected for the Choir, a trust is placed in him. It is expected that the choir member holds to his trust, and feels honor-bound to do the job in the Choir to the best of his abilities. No one is to let down his fellow choir members and the director.
